President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov will participate in the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to be held in Uzbek capital of Samarkand on September 15-16, the Uzbek news website nuz.uz cites Rakhmatulla Nurimbetov, the SCO national coordinator for Uzbekistan, as saying at a briefing on Friday
Apart from the eight SCO member states, the leaders of three observer states (Belarus, Iran and Mongolia) are expected to participate in the summit.
“We expect guests-leaders of the countries with which the presidency maintains close contacts. Among them are the presidents of Turkey and Turkmenistan, and we also expect a number of guests that are being agreed upon,” Nurimbetov said.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an intergovernmental organization founded in Shanghai in June 2001. The SCO member countries are China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan. The main objectives of the SCO are to strengthen relations among member states, promote cooperation in political affairs, economics and trade, scientific-technical, cultural, and educational spheres as well as in energy, transportation, tourism, and environmental protection, safeguard regional peace, security, and stability; and create a democratic, equitable international political and economic order.
