It is not understandable as to why some political leaders and a section of media have started indulging in kite flying on the question whether or not the Army chief be given extension in service after November of the current year when is supposed to retire. Those who know General Rahel Shareef inside out understand that he is not a worldly man nursing any ambitions. He knows that it was by dint of his ability and hard work that he has risen to the top most rank within the Armed forces of Pakistan and he would like to go honourably with his head high when the time of his retirement comes. It was unwarranted on the part of Aitzaz Ahsan to openly declare that his party is against the extension in his service. If somebody is against the practice of giving extensions in service to the Army chiefs there are certainly better ways or words to express one’s disapprobation on it and as far as Aitzaz is concernced he should have been the last person to make this statement. Didn’t his party boss also give extension to General Kiyani in the not-too-distant past?
The new Tax Amnesty Scheme was bound to touch off reaction in the civil society. Obviously those filthy rich persons who are going to benefit from it have joined forces with Ishaq Dar against those activists in the civil society who have raised a banner of rebellion against it. If our parliamentarians did not oppose it enmasse they would lose whatever little credibility they had in the eyes of the common man.
The Saudis should not have beheaded the Shia cleric and in the same manner the Iranian government should not have allowed the Shia protesters to ransack Saudi Mission in Tehran. Both were extreme steps which have excerbated the already tense relationship between these two countries. Had Tehran adopted the diplomatic course like the one adopted by Pakistan on the execution of Bihari leaders belonging to the JI in Bangladesh that would have placed it on higher moral ground. Any how what is done cannot be undone now. The Muslim world, particularly, Pakistan should move with abundant caution in the matter as we have cordial relations both with our neighbour Iran as well as Riyadh.
