RAWALPINDI, April 5: It is a scientific fact that most of the initial mental development of a child finishes by the age of 5. This makes the early years of childhood a most crucial and pivotal period. The outlook that the child inherits of the world at this age sticks with them for the rest of their lives. It shapes the child’s demeanour, behaviour and attitude. It is also common that by this age a child is usually admitted to school at the kindergarten level.
This means that not only the parents but also the child’s teachers become responsible for moulding the future of the child.
Now, as parents we do not bear the slightest shortcoming on our part regarding our child’s upbringing. We try to give them the safest and healthiest environment at home. We try to teach them nice etiquettes. We teach them manners, how to be courteous, we keep them away from bad company as much as possible so that the child does not develop bad habits.
But why is it that when it comes to the child’s education, we blindly trust brand names and school teachers when it is clear that they play a major role in the child’s upbringing and development.
What would be the use of providing the best things for your child at home, if they are going to forget all they are taught because of the unhealthy environment of a mismanaged school?
There is nothing more a child needs than a good start in early childhood education.
And a small school in Rawalpindi, under that very name, is providing its students the best and healthiest education under their roof.
Good Start Pre-School and Montessori began operating in 2009 with the aim of bringing quality education to its neighbourhood which was at the time lacking a decent educational institution. Since then it has grown to encompass a major part of Rawalpindi.
Their aim is simple, to deliver quality education in a safe and healthy environment which helps to nurture the child’s creativity and to move them forward in the right direction.
At their small but bright and cheerful campus, they provide education to many destitute and under-privileged children of all ages.
With their self-trained and ECD literate teachers, the school takes as much responsibility for the child as their parents.
Along with the curriculum, the children are taught proper manners, etiquettes and are provided with an atmosphere that nurtures their creativity, self-confidence and independence. The school organizes many educational trips throughout the year. Only recently its students became the stars of the occasion when they took part in a tree plantation drive by Clean and Green Pakistan. They were also involved in the inauguration of the Dewar-e-Meherbaani campaign launched in Islamabad where they donated books, notebooks, pencils, crayons and other school supplies for needy children. The school has also been invited to numerous events hosted by the Journalism Foundation.
Talking to their principal, I came across a valuable piece of advice which the school management and their staff hold in high regard. The Principal said ” In a world where you can be anything, we teach our children to be kind. ”
The Principal further added that their main goal was to provide affordable but quality education that fully complies with international standards to children disadvantaged by poverty.
Talking to the staff, I was told that their motto was ” Learn well so you can Teach well”.
As children grow and observe the world, they come across many questions. Only a teacher who himself holds enough knowledge can stand in front of a child and answer their questions. Thus the teachers at Good Start School and Montessori take part in teacher training workshops multiple times a year so that they can continue polishing their skills and abilities as a teacher. The Principal told us that there were students at Good Start who could not even speak Urdu, let alone English. But now they reply in proper English to any question whatsoever. In my conversation with many of the young students, I was surprised by their politeness, polished manners and confidence that is rarely seen in children of young ages.
On the whole, visiting Good Start Pre-School and Montessori, I had a great experience at a lovely institution that is truly aware of its responsibility as groomers of our future generations.-PR
