It seems the government has some reservations of getting the Panama leaks inquired into through Shoaib Suddle whose name was suggested by Imran Khan, otherwise, instead of agreeing to it, the interior ministry had not asked the PTI chairman to suggest name of any FIA officer for getting the matter probed into. Why FIA?Is it because it would be quite easier for the government to get inquiry report of its liking?Shoaib Suddle is reputed to be the sort of person who does not necessarily toe the line of those who roam in the corridors of power. If this stalemate over the question as to who should hold the probe into the Panama leaks continues unabated it would be difficult to separate the grain from the chaff. The PPP had already rejected out of hand the decision of the government to get the matter looked into by a Commission comprising a retired judge of the Supreme Court. The prime minister must have drawn comfort from the stand of the PPP that while it wants to get the Panama leaks scandal sorted out it does want the prime minister to resign. Mian Nawaz Sharif must be happy that the politically shrewd Maulana Fazlur Rehman has also been hitherto standing behind him foursquare on this issue.
The Panama leaks have destroyed many political personalities of the world. Even if, for some reason or the other, our prime minister survives them, still among the masses he would not be the same Nawaz Sharif as he was till yesterday. These leaks are going to nibble at his reputation and his party will have to pay a heavy price for it in the next general elections.
The common man of this country who has pinned great hopes on the implementation of the Beijing-assisted economic corridor is genuinely worried about its fate and prays that the current political turmoil in the country does not affect it anyway because such an opportunity doesn’t come in the life of a country frequently and it should never be missed.
