There is a move to bring the ISI under the direct control of parliament which in other words amounts to reducing its status to that of the FIA or the Special Branch. There appears to be a calculated move in this direction by the PPP in the NA in the form of a Bill which the insiders say would get the support of the ruling party too because there is no love lost between it and the Establishment also. It is another matter that it does want to take the Establishment head on on any issue because of its past bitter experiences. The ISI is considered to be the most effective state organ which has been, by and large, doing excellent job hitherto in countering the conspiracies of our enemies against us both inside and outside this country and any attempt to politicise it by making it subservient to parliament which comprise politicians tantamount to politicising it. The common man of the country would never approve such a move. The common man had also opposed the creation of a political wing inside the ISI by late ZA Bhutto back in 1975 through an executive order.
The woes of the PPP in Sind are increasing by the day. Almost all the regional and nationalist parties of the province have formed a grand political alliance under the leadership of PIr Pagara against it. Efforts are also afoot to persuade the PTI as well as (N) League also to join it. At the moments things are not at all going in favour of the PPP and the deck seems to be heavily loaded against it. Zardari’s political graph has touched an all-time low. The fear of his possible arrest is preventing him from returning to Karachi. Though he has feigned illness as an excuse for not returning to Pakistan but the leaders of the Grand Political Alliance are not ready to buy this excuse. Which type of illness does he suffer from under which he can fly to Saudi Arabia for Umra but couldn’t come to Karachi? they ask.
POSTSCRIPT: The traffic police deserves hosannas for fining the driver of the official car of the speaker of the provincial assembly of the KPK’s assembly for overspreading the other day and also the speaker for paying Rs 700 happily without knitting his brow.
