‘Over Rs630m to be spent on new fish seed hatcheries, nursery units’

LAHORE, April 17: The Punjab government will spend over Rs630m on the establishment of new hatcheries and nursery units besides use of barren lands for fisheries purpose to meet the growing demand of fish seed.
While talking to a delegation of Progressive Fish Farmers, Director General Fisheries Punjab Dr Muhammad Ayub said that a large hatchery is being established in Lahore at Bhaseen on 60 acres of land whereas five nursery units over six acres land each are being set up in Pakpattan, Mandi Bahauddin, Narowal, Chiniot and Nankana Sahib, said après release issued on Sunday.
He announced that Punjab govt will also establishment a large fish seed hatchery and nursery units in five districts, production of additional three million quality fish seed of culturable fish species could be possible as well as problems of fish farmers would also be addressed as these districts are lacking this facility.While briefing on the project Dr Ayub said that a fish seed hatchery would be established in Rajanpur district with an annual production capacity of up to five million which will be supplied for natural waters in Dera Ghazi Khan division and fish farms set up in private sector. It will increase fish production up to 600 to 800 metric tons besides building up the capacity of the three existing fish seed nursery units at Gujja (Muzaffargarh), Jampur (Rajanpur) and Drahama (DG Khan). He said that on the completion of this project, an additional production of 60 thousand fish seed would be available from these units.-Online
