Three big public rallies held on a single day, one in Islamabad, second in Lahore and the third in Karachi by three different political groups on last sunday created an impression as if the general elections are going to be held in the country tomorrow. Maybe, the politicians have started rehearsing for them. The political actors of the PTI, JI and the newly-formed Pak Sarzameen Party born out of the womb of the MQM vent their spleen on their political adversaries in these political shows, The PML(N) is also toying with the idea of jumping into the fray as its leader has reportedly decided to address public rallies in those districts where his political party has sufficient vote banks. It means the prime minister is adamant and is not going to resign and wait at the sidelines the result of the Forensic audit of his alleged involvement in the offshore companies. The PPP has decided why it should remain behind so Bilawal is also gearing up to start addressing public meetings soon. These political developments mean there is going to be a fairly long election campaign this time round before the next general elections due in 2018.
The buzz word in the political arena these days is crusade against corruption which has eaten into the vitals of this country.
It would be interesting to see as to how far the PPP can go against the PML(N) over the Panama leaks. It would certainly like to see the rulers at Islamabad discredited in the public eye as much as possible in the matter but would never like to see their back by any other method except through ballot paper in the next elections.
POSTSCRIPT: Without going into the merits and demerits of the newly created political party of Mustafa Kamal let us admit that a split has occurred in the MQM. Mustafa Kamal has done well as mayor of Karachi and he is now cashing on it. The dyed-in-the-wool followers of Altaf Hussain, however, say that when it would come to the crunch they would carry the day.
