Plato had said long ago no one should earn more than five times any one else. Truer words were never spoken. Look at the difference in the earnings today of people belonging to different professional groups and you would find out the reason for the frustration writ large on the faces of teeming millions. Even in the so-called western countries too life for every one is not beer and skittles. Only a couple of countries which can be counted on fingers are social welfare countries in the strict sense of the word. Mention can be made of England, Canada or the Scandinavian countries in this respect.
As far as we are concernced we are neither here nor there. We experimented with both the presidential and parliamentary system of democracy though half-heartedly. Some of our leaders fancied socialism and some plumped for Islamic economic system but they were never sincere to their slogans and manifestos.
Frankly speaking, there is extreme economic disparity in the country today, the like of which was never seen by it before. The filthy rich should thank their stars that the commoners are lying in slumber, otherwise, the political atmosphere in the country is ripe for a revolution. Day light robberies, thefts, kidnappings for ransom, break-ins are not without good reasons. They are symptomatic of economic exploitation of the masses by a handful of rich mafias. Life is becoming exceedingly difficult for the common man. He finds it difficult to make both ends meet and keep his body and soul together.
In a parliamentary system the members of parliament are supposed to reflect the wishes and sentiments of the electorate. The present parliamentarians have disappointed the nation on many scores. There are many areas which require legislation. Many laws on the statute books need amendments in order to bring them in consonance with the ground realities. Their indifference in the matter only proves two things. Either they are least bothered about the real issues of the people or they are not blessed with wisdom and expertise required for performing the job for which they were elected to parliament. What good is parliament if it cannot force the finance minister to impose direct taxation in the country and bring the filthy rich under the tax net?Has the electorate sent the parliamentarians to NA and Senate only for enjoying fat monthly purse plus other umpteen fringe benefits that go with it and partake ambroisal food in parliament’s cafeteria at a highly subsidised price?
