Modi is trying to sorround us from both the sides. India’s latest marriage of convenience with Iran is not without good reasons. During the recent visit to Iran of the Indian prime minister a number of economic deals were signed which wax eloquent of the grown and growing friendship between these two countries While there is nothing wrong in their bilateral ties but given the fact that India lets no opportunity slip through its fingers by which it could harm Pakistan, it is quite natural that we should not take whatever India does in our neighbourhood on its face value. Our intelligence agencies would have to be extra vigilant in monitoring the activities of the Indian diplomats stationed in Iran as we have had a very bitter experience of them in Afghanistan. The sapling of friendship sown by Nehru in Afghanistan back in 1947 has now grown into a fully grown tree which has been providing fruit to the Indians now. Not once but many times in the past the Indians have used Afghanistan’s soil for stirring trouble in Pakistan. What is the guarantee that they won’t repeat history while sitting in Iran with which we share border also. India is financing the development of Chahbahar seaport in Iran with two ends in view. It would use it as a launching pad to enter into Afghanistan for bolstering its trade with the central Asian countries thus reducing its dependence on Pakistan for the purpose. It can use Iran’s soil , like it has been using that of Afghanistan’s for carrying out subversion inside Pakistan.
It is a pity that neither the present nor the past federal government could solve Balochistan’s imbroglio. The uncertain political conditions there provide an ideal atmosphere and opportunity for India to fish in the troubled waters in that province. The upcoming Gwadar port is a sore in the eyes of both India and the US. New Delhi doesn’t want to see us prosper economically while Washington is against the spread of Chinese influence in this region. Our so-called friends in the Arab Emirates too realise that when Gwadar would become operational it would upstage other sea ports of the region which will pale in comparison with it.
