SartajAzizISLAMABAD, June 2: Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz has said that US drone strikes were against Pakistan security and sovereignty and drone strikes have dealt a serious blow to peace efforts in the region.
“The US drone strikes run counter to security and sovereignty of Pakistan. Such acts on the part of the US have dealtt a fatal blow to peace in the region. The death of the Taliban leadership in the US drone attack has undermined the talks process and endeavours for establishment of peace in Afghanistan. However, Pakistan will continue to play its role for peace in the region”, Aziz said this during his meeting with US ambassador to Pakistan David Hale here on Thursday.
The two exchanged views on a range of issues including Pakistan-US ties, Afghan reconciliation process, security situation and the post-US drone strike situation. Aziz said Pakistan has played a role of front line state in war on terror and has rendered sacrifices more than any other country. The operation Zarb-e-Azb has led to bring about much peace in the region. The world community should acknowledge Pakistan’s sacrifices in the war on terror, he said. Aziz said Pakistan wants peace in Afghanistan. “Peace in Afghanistan is in the interest of the entire region. Pakistan has played a vital role in bringing Afghan government and the Taliban on the negotiation table as Pakistan thinks that war is no option for settlement of problems and only dialogue is key to solution of simmering issue,” he said.
Hale said that Pakistan was playing a crucial role in war on terror and the US will continue to extend its cooperation to Pakistan on this count. -Online
