ISLAMABAD, June 6: Initiating the debate on the budget in National Assembly Leader of the Opposition Syed Khurshid Ahmad Shah expressed the view that the budget was directionless and it is difficult to describe it as people, farmer or worker friendly. He said the government has been talking about overcoming the power shortages but the claim is not backed by solid work.
Syed Khurshid Shah proposed that instead of coal based plants the focus should be on hydel power to produce cheaper and environment-friendly power. He said agriculture is facing crisis and hoped that the package announced in the budget would be implemented in letter and spirit. He suggested that sales tax on tractors should be abolished to provide relief to farmers.
The leader of the opposition said the tendency of relying heavily on debt should be discarded and instead we should learn to live within our own resources.
The Leader of the Opposition said that tax have been levied on the plain paper while printed paper exempted from the tax which has reduced the printing of the Holy Quran in the country. He said, consequently, we have to import copies of the Holy Quran from Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries. He said the government should pay attention in this regard to encourage the printing of Holy Quran in the country.
Khurshid Shah said due to expensive electricity for the industries, the production of different products has been reduced. He said the production of steel has been reduced near to nil and we have to import steel from the neighbouring countries. He said steps should be taken to provide cheap electricity to the industrial sector.
The leader of the opposition said that the benefits of reduction in the prices of the petroleum products have not been transferred to the masses in real sense. He said the major affectees of the higher price of diesel are the farmers and the poor segments of the society. He said the benefits of the reduction in the prices of the petroleum products
should be transferred to the masses.
The National Assembly resumed its session in Islamabad on Monday after two days break. Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq chaired the session.-Sabah
