The tone and tenor of Bilawal’s latest speech leave one in no doubt that the PPP has declared political war on the PML(N). His threat that the PPP would not allow Mohammad Nawaz Sharif to run away from the Panama leaks is being taken seriously by the PML(N) leaders as is evident from their rejoinders on Bilawal’s speech issued by them. What is noteworthy is the fact that they are not denying the contents of these leaks. They are beating the drum of Zardari’s Swiss accounts as well as Surrey Palace as a counterblast. In an obvious reference to Bilawal they ask:How come a boy raised in Surrey Palace bought with the black money can accuse us of corruption? These accusations and counter accusations must have been reaching the ears of Nawaz Sharif recuperating from his open heart surgery in London. One wonders how the PM with a dicky heart is going to survive the scathing criticism which he is being subjected to ad nauseam ?It is in his own interest that he should call it a day now and nominate his successor as early as possible to look after the affairs of the government and supervise the various mega developmental projects visualised by him. In doing so he should be careful not to name anybody from his family as his successor in order to dispel the general perception that he is hoisting dynastic politics on his party. The earlier he does it the better for his own health as well as for the country’s. The office which he is holding demands almost round the clock attention while it is suicidal for a person whose heart carries as many as four grafted arteries to pay attention to any job for more than one or two hours daily for at least one year after heart surgery. While it would be difficult for the PPP to cash in much from the Panama leaks apart from dispelling the impression that it has been a friendly opposition to the ruling party because it also has a lot to live down, the main beneficiary is going to be the PTI and its political allies. The PM would be writing his own political obituary as well as of his political party if he tried to appoint any member from among his next of kin or his brother for the job of the PM Odds are that the political situation in the country is going to further heat up once the month of fasting is over. Both the PPP and the PTI have been girding up their loins. The JI too has been baring its teeth. The hands of the rulers sitting in Islamabad are going to be full during their remaining stint in office. Mark my words.
