It is a naked rape of political morality and conscientious governance, if the news is true that, the Government, on the directive of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has approved development schemes estimated to have a total cost of Rs. 1.15 billion for Mansehra, which is his son-in-law and Maryam Nawaz’s husband Captain ( r ) Safdar’s constituency. This kind of unashamed and naked nepotism can only lead to consolidation of the point of view that this form of democracy, i.e constituency-based parliamentary model will keep pushing Pakistan towards the precipice of a total breakdown of the state.
This is not only corruption on a Colossal scale; it is also a kind of assertion of a statement that our Prime Minister is interested in the development of only those islands of interest in the country that his family and his cronies can claim to be their own.
It is heartening to note that massive corruption and ‘servicing’ of self-interest on the part of two successive governments raised on the concept of parliamentary majority has triggered a debate in the country whether Pakistan can continue to afford a democratic form that essentially is the rule of the elected oligarchy.
Pakistan was not created for small little monarchs or oligarchs who were elected into the country’s parliament on the strength of their money and influence and who acquired the power to elect the Emperor.
Pakistan has two emperors. One is now a ‘former’. And the other the incumbent. One is headquartered in Dubai, and the other in London.
