As the retirement age of General Rahel Shareef draws closer and closer the common man feels sad by the day. By his untiring work round the clock, dedication and commitment to his professional duties and financial integrity he has won the hearts of his country men. He feels comfortable by remaining in the midst of his jawans in the bunkers whether it is Data khel or Shawal instead of spending eid holidays in the air conditioned rooms. Armymen like him are a rare commodity who are born once in a blue moon. One can only pray that whosoever succeeds him as Army chief would follow in his footsteps hook, line and sinker and carry on the crusade against the terrorists with the same zeal, grit and determination with which he has been carrying out since the day he assumed the mantle of Army chief. The traditions set up by him are worth following by every army man and there is a need in their continuity.
If in the Armed forces we are lucky to have role a model like Rahel Shareef, amongst the civilians we have much to learn from the way Abdul Sattar Eidhi spent his life and ran an organisation for the public good and welfare. Some body very rightly billed him as KHADIM-e-AZAM. Who says he was poorest of the poor. He was richest of the rich. He lived in the heart of every Pakistani and every eye in the country was wet to hear that he had joined the great majority. His son Faisal who will now run Eidhi foundation according to Sattar Eidhi’s will has said even if lived twenty times more the age of his father he won’t be able to reach the heights achieved by his father in the realm of public service. Let us hope that the successors of Abdul Sattar Eidhi would carry forward the torch lit by him with the same passion which was seen in his works.
