The phrases “Back Channel Contacts” and “Track Two Diplomacy” have grown very familiar to the ears. These may have different impact on different persons. As far as I am concerned, they carry ‘smell’ of sinister motives. Any activity that is carried out in secrecy does exude an aura of ‘conspiratorial’ intentions. For example the other day the former Foreign Minister of Pakistan Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri in his interview to Kamran Khan made a sensational revelation regarding his secret contacts with Israeli officials. I was dumbfounded. Israel to me is not a country. It is, in the words of Mark Antonius, a dagger plunged into the heart of the Muslim Middle East. Antonius was an Italian writer who after the World War wrote a sensational bestseller, The Dagger Of Israel”.
If you look at the map, the outlines of Israel resemble those of a dagger.
Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri is a thorough professional. Like an actor, he can play the role of Henry and Becket with equal dexterity.
There is a sensational disclosure now that Modi and Mian too have tried their luck at Track Two Diplomacy— or Back Channel Dialogue or Secret Parleys.
Even though the Government has hurriedly denied it and dubbed the disclosure as a blatant lie, I am sure General Raheel wouldn’t be finding easy to believe either the disclosure or the denial.
Why do the two prime ministers give an impression that they ‘in their first ‘janam’ were buddies in the same class and school?
