The recent attempted military coup in Turkey failed because an overwhelming majority of Turks was opposed to it, therefore, it took to the streets and physically blocked the movement of army tanks in Istanbul for preventing them from dislodging the elected government. Many Turks lost their lives in their bid to fail military take over. This was a far cry from this country. Thrice did the army trucks roll in the federal capital once in 1958, second in 1977 and third in 1999 and each time the man in the street distributed sweets and heaved a sigh of relief when martial law was imposed on the country. Why?Reason:Elementary:It was only because the so-called champions of democracy had only played lip service to democracy. They had failed to deliver making it exceedingly difficult for the common man to make his two ends meet so every time he saw their back he had reason to rejoice. There is a lesson to be learnt by our politicians from this abortive military take over in Turkey. The common man would stand behind them only if they would translate into reality their political manifestos instead of using them as a political stunt for getting into power.
The common man doesn’t expect moon from the political government. All he wants is a square meal a day, roof over his head, safeguard of his honour and property and that’s that. What good is a Democratic government if it even cannot deliver him these basic neccesities of life.
The Turkish government should, however, would be well advised to dig deep into the matter for finding out the main reason behind the unrest that forced a section of the Turkish army to resort to this extreme step. If a genuine grievance was found out it should be addressed properly and without any loss of time but if it turned out that it was a sheer military adventure of a few hot headed army officers or the mavericks were induced by some foreign machinations then they be dealt with very harshly and an example be made of them. In any case the rebels don’t deserve any mercy, whatever.
