The PML (N) and its boss might well have been given a golden opportunity to celebrate the results of the AJK assembly, but the nation in general can’t but mourn over the cruel disempowerment of the majority of the Kashmiri people.
In the ‘democratic’ model dear to our ruling classes, the minority is provided the right to rule over the majority in such a brazen way that the very objective of ‘democracy’ is ruthlessly defeated. Precisely why I tend to say that in our country the majority is effectively disempowered through elections.
The recently concluded AJK elections are a classical example of this totally undemocratic practice opted in the name of democracy.
The total number of votes casted in the election stood around 17 lakhs, of which the PML (N) secured 689000 votes. Meaning thereby that around a million votes were casted against the PML (N). thus over 60% Kashmiri voters rejected the PML(N).
The share of the PTI was the second highest (383000 votes). Then came the PPP (352000 votes). Thus the two combined secured around 46000 votes more than the PML (N). This clearly is a show of no-confidence in the polices of the PML (N) regarding the issue of Kashmir and the Indian aggressors.
Considering the fact that the party in power in Islamabad traditionally has always won the AJK elections because of its administrative and financial control over Muzzafarabad, and also the fact that Nawaz Sharif government spent billions to secure victory in these elections, the failure of the PML (N) to secure 51% votes can’t but be regarded as a rejection of the Pro-Modi policies of Mian Nawaz Sharif.
It should be kept in view here that 12 out of 41 seats of the AJK assembly are effectively placed under the direct control of the administration in Islamabad.
It is high time that the people of the country rise in revolt against a system that seeks to disenfranchise the majority.
Precisely why there is proportional representation in Germany. Also why the US and France both have adopted a system in which the Chief Executive of the Government is always elected by majority.
