Given the fact that the new CM of Sindh has also a lot to live down, miracles should not be expected from him. He can steady the ship of his party in Sindh during the two years that are going to be available to him up till the next elections only if he avoids the mistakes committed by his predecessor and stops picking up unnecessary quarrels with the Rangers who should be given a free hand to clean the Augean stables of his province without any let or hindrance. Khurshid Shah should not praise the Sindh police because everybody knows how much politicised it is and how shamefacedly it is being used as its handmaiden by the Sindh government. The new CM will have to come down with a heavy hand on the land mafia in Sindh. His predecessor had made a mess of law and order of the province.
He should make it clear on his party men that crime doesn’t pay. The tragedy with his predecessor was that he played second fiddle to his party’s boss Zardari. Granted that one has to toe party line but, more often than not, if decisions made unilaterally by the top man in any political party are implemented without putting them to the litmus test of discussion the possibility that most of them might go haywire cannot be ruled out altogether.
A great deal would depend on the new CM of Sindh as to how he does he manage affairs of his province. He has inherited a province from his predecessor which is in a very bad shape. The writ of the state is nowhere to be seen. The terrorists have let loose a reign of terror. The highly politicised police is simply incapable of fighting urban terrorism. Land Mafia rules the roost and enjoys full patronage of those who move in the corridor of power. Things would improve only if the new CM looks different from his predecessor in his thinking and deeds. If he would tread the beaten path, his party might face the danger of extinction in Sindh too in the next polls. Mark my words.
