28 years ago on 17th of August 1988, a C-130 plane carrying Zia-ul-Haque crashed near Bahawalpur thus bringing to an end his 11-year rule over this country with an iron fist. Man proposes and God disposes. Insiders say he had decided to doff military uniform in 1992 and become civilian president of the country for another 5 years but Providence had something other in store for him. His detractors accuse him of toppling Bhutto’s regime without any solid rhyme and reason as the agitating PNA leaders had hit it off with Bhutto after a long parleys and the latter had acceded to their demand of holding fresh polls on those seats on which gerrymandering had allegedly taken place. They also accuse him of growing back on his promise to hold fresh polls within 90 days and prolonged his stay in power for over a decade. He was also held responsible for what the legal community bill as judicial murder of Bhutto. It is said that Zia was afraid that if he held the polls afresh no body can prevent Bhutto from regaining power through ballot because of his immense public appeal and popularity among the masses who consider him to be the true champion of the have-nots and in case he came to power he was going to put him in the dock for committing treason.
It is widely rumoured that Washington had had an hidden hand behind his murder because after the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan he had started thinking in terms of how to unite the Muslim ummah from the soil of Nile to Kashghar. How could jews-dominated US like this idea?
Zia was mentor of Nawaz Sharif. Up till a couple of years back Mian Nawaz Sharif along with his partymen used to visit his grave in Islamabad every year on his death anniversary to pay homage to his benefactor ——a practice discarded by him for quite some time now.
