The common man has appreciated the setting up of a well-equipped check post at Torkham and he is now looking forward to see many similar check posts coming up at other entrance points into Pakistan along the Pak-Afghan border also. The day Torkham’s border checkpost started functioning there has been an appreciable fall in the number of Afghanis who used to cross over into KPK without any let or hindrance in thousands daily. With the introduction of stringent checking system at the border their number is now not more than a few hundreds daily. Likewise, the man in the street has also eulogised the government decision that all Afghan refugees now must pack up and return to their home and hearth by the end of this year. Let us hope that it will abide by its order this time round as many such orders had been issued from time to time in the past only to be suspended later on. It is hoped that through these new check posts there is going to be an effective control over smuggling into Afghanistan of many edibles as a result of which food scarcity is invariably created in Pakistan every year and the common man suffers tremendously.
One can see a group of politicians and vested interest trying to further prolong the stay of Afghan refugees in this country on one pretext or the other as this suits their political objectives. The government should be aware of their hidden motives . There cannot be two opinions about the fact that one of the main reasons for weaponisation of our society and deterioration in our law and order situation is the presence of Afghan refugees in our midst. The earlier we got rid of them the better. The process of repatriation of Afghan refugees has started which is fair enough . There is a need to get it expedited.
