Time was when both Naheed Khan and her husband Safdar Abbasi were quite close to Benazir. Naheed was to Benazir what Noora was to her father. She gave her ear to Naheed even in party matters. After her assassination Naheed had fallen on bad days. Zardari started giving her a wide berth after he took over command of the party. The cleavage between her and Zardari widened after she started indulging in criticism of the new set up in the PPP after the demise of Benazir.
Naheed and her husband off and on have been giving public statements since 2008. After reading between the lines of these statements it was not difficult to discern that they were utterly frustrated and disappointed from those who formed Zardari’s team between 2008 and 2013. In a recent press conference in the federal capital Naheed Khan appreciated the stance adopted by Bilawal against corruption but sarcastically reminded him of the corrupt element present in his own party and the need to get rid of them as early as possible. Truer words were never spoken. How the hell can he launch a political movement against corruption in the country with the help of persons in his party who are themselves not above board and who are soiled with corruption from top to bottom?
Bilawal is a young person , a novice in politics who is still in his salad days. He has still to learn a lot. With all his good intentions he cannot make his mark on the country’s politics unless he sheds the heavy baggage of corrupt leaders which he his carrying on his shoulders. One wonders whether his father will allow him to ditch them? This a big question which needs an answer.
