Every year the death anniversary of the Founder of this nation reminds us how ungrateful we have been to him.He won for us freedom from the British yoke through his honesty of purpose and hard work in his bid to create a social welfare state where the muslims could live their lives in accordance with the tenets of Islam. The Hindus and the Britishers had offered him prime ministership of combined India till death should he stop insisting on partition of the sub-continent.Had he been power hungry he would have grasped that opportunity. The Quaid must be turning in his grave today over what we have done to his legacy. He had visualised a country where there would be equitable distribution of wealth;where there would be no economic exploitation and no sectarian hatred. At so many times in so many speeches he had said that in Pakistan all the religious minorities would be free to live their lives according to their beliefs. He advocated rule of law and democracy .He believed in unity, faith and discipline. It is a pity that we as a nation in general and our successive governments,in particular, paid only lip service to his sayings.Small wonder our conditions have been going from bad to worse.
Had we followed even fifty percent of his beliefs and directives we would not have come to such a pass .After the demise of Liaqat Ali Khan a majority of Muslim leaguers did not follow the guidelines which the Quaid had laid down for them. They deviated from them, hook, line and sinker .Personality clashes among his followers split the ML into so many splinter parties that one lost count of them. There was Convention League,Council League,Functional League,Q League,Junejo League and Nawaz League,to mention a few,all of them claiming to be the true descendent of the Quaid but in practice all of them treaded paths which ran counter to his ideology.
