KARACHI: A Joint investigation team (JIT) quizzed the held Mayor of the city, Wasim Akhtar, recently during which the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader has made untold revelations, ARY News reported on Thursday.
The official JIT team probing bloody incidents of the notorious May 12, 2007, and August 22 this year visited MQM leader at the city’s central prison seeking details of both the incidents – few of the worst in the history of Karachi.
JIT claimed, Akhtar admitted that he had information about a bloody mayhem on the roads of Karachi on May 12.
Muttahida leader said, as per the JIT, he was told that various political parties would also hold rallies on the same day in Karachi.
Speaking about the then Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s arrival in the city, the Mayor of Karachi claimed to have supervised his security himself, according to the JIT.
While turning attention to the developments that unfolded on August 22 in Karachi last month, Akhtar said Altaf Hussain’s anti-Pakistan speech was offensive and termed him as a traitor, the JIT said. May 12, 2007, is one of the darkest days for Pakistan when innocent blood was shed brazenly in Karachi when the former chief justice was visiting Karachi. At least 40 people were killed and over 90 others were wounded in armed clashes between workers of varying political parties.
Main opposition parties in the country have long blamed MQM for indulging in the armed clash and allegedly carrying out the killings.
While on August 22, MQM disowned chief Altaf Hussain who told his party supporters and workers to attack few media houses including ARY News for not giving due coverage to MQM’s hunger camp.
Later audio clips that promptly appeared on social media – since he is banned from the mainstream media – revealed Hussain earlier made worrying anti-Pakistan statements during the telephonic address from Edgware, London.
MQM workers clashed with police and ransacked ARY News Karachi bureau leaving one person dead and several others injured.
Altaf Hussain’s second-in-command Dr Farooq Sattar later announced to disown him as party chief and MQM’s representation in London recently.
On Wednesday, several political parties including MQM passed a resolution against MQM’s founder in the Sindh assembly, which called for his trial under Article 6 of the Constitution. – Agencies
