A TV channel telecast the other day a footage showing ambroisal food being served to 40000 invitees in the walima reception of the son of a Nawaz League MPA in Lahore. Even if the carerers had charged Rs 300 per person which is much on the lower side given the high rates charged by the hoteliers these days on marriage ceremonies, the amount spent on food alone must have run into astronomical figure running into crores of rupees. One cannot recall such a big number of guests ever invited by any one on walima reception.
Had this country been a truly Democratic country with strong state institutions, the tax authorities by now would have asked the said MPA whether or not he is a regular tax payer and how much money has he deposited by way of income and wealth tax during the past ten years. They would have also asked him about the source of the fat purse which he had spent on serving food alone to the guests invited by him on walima, what to speak of other allied expenditure which must have been incurred by him on the marriage of his son. His nomination papers which he had deposited with the returning officer at the time elections in 2013 also needs to be doubly scrutinised to ascertain whether he had given correct information about his wealth .
It was the duty of the chief minister Panjab to have given him a dressing down for his extravaganza on the marriage of his son which has raised many eyebrows in the country. It is not said without good reason that behind every big fortune there lies a crime. Being filthy rich is a crime but flaunting one’s money is a much bigger crime. Why should Shareef brothers be rubbing their shoulders with such filthy rich in their political party?
