The Cyril almieda report was a classical case of ‘doctored information’. Whether it was ‘doctored’ by the newspaper, or the ‘source’ of the ‘information’ has yet to be known. If Chaudhry Nisar can manage to prove himself credible atleast on this part of his declared resolve to bring the ‘culprits’ to task, the people of Pakistan may know in a day or two who stabbed our Army in the back. But judging the credibility of the Minister of Interior by his record so far, those who masterminded the ‘notorious leak’ are likely to get away with the crime. Someone may be picked up to be made a convenient scapegoat in the whole affair, but Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is likely to prove again that his luck hasn’t run out yet, and he still has the capability to humiliate his “arch political adversary” at will. He has done it successfully before through the services of Khwaja Asif, Mushahidullah Khan and Pervez Rasheed.
Make no mistake about whom Mian regards his “arch adversary”. Imran Khan, Mian Sahib is confident, can be handled effectively through the dependable ‘efficiency’ of the Election Commission. But the Pakistan Army can only be handled through a dependable COAS which Mian Sahib seems in no position to appoint.
Mian Sahib knows it is beyond his capability to find a Mamnoon Hussain wearing a four-star uniform. But he is prepared to settle on a less threatening Raheel Sharif. The term ‘threatening’ needs to be explained here. Anyone in the country whose popularity graph goes above a certain limit is a threat to not only the Prime Minister’s power but also to his entire family’s fortunes.
The question for us to find a credible answer is:
WILL THE PM BE CYRIL-ed OR PANAMA- ised?
