Who will hunt down the mastermind behind the doctored and sinister news-leak (or newsfeed) that triggered a worldwide media attack on Pakistan Army?
The Minister of Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan was so utterly right when he, in his first press conference on this issue, categorically stated that whosoever had indulged in this exercise had facilitated the enemies of Pakistan to conduct a vicious propaganda campaign against our country. He had resolutely declared that the culprits, howsoever influential would be caught and put on trial. He had even indicated that all this would be done within two to three days.
A whole week since then has passed. And Chaudhry Nisar has failed to bring the culprits to the public view. This is despite the fact that the commanders of the Pak Army have gone on record to state that this kind of breach of National Security was unacceptable, and the Army Chief has met the Prime Minister twice to convey the seriousness and the sensitivity of the FEED that had led to the BREACH.
The Prime Minister of course seems to be in no hurry to ‘catch the thief’. The only understandable reason behind his ‘lack of interest’ and urgency is that he can’t afford to let the culprit or culprits be caught, who could lead to ‘sensational disclosers’.
Even though Cyril Almeida was taken off the ECL on the basis of his ‘journalistic’ privilege on account of which both the APNS and the CPNE had met the Minister of Interior, the bitter truth is that the concept of ‘freedom of expression’ does not hold ‘good’ in the cases of breach of National Security. Cyril should have been taken into custody and made to divulge the identity of his source or sources.
This didn’t happen.
What can happen now may not augur well for the banner-holders or flag-bearers of the concept of FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif too is on the brink now.
