Atomic weapons have both advantage and disadvantage. Their biggest advantage is their deterrence value. If the Soviet Union in its heyday didn’t go on a war with the US it was only because of them.
The insiders know that by 1987 Pakistan had acquired nuclear capability. In the same year India had assembled its forces on Rajhistan border with Pakistan and reports were that it wanted to intervene in Sadiqabad area in order to cut our link with the sea. One fine morning General Zia ul Haque all of a sudden landed in New Delhi after he informed the Indian prime minister that he was coming to see cricket match in Jaipur. The Indian premier Rajiv was not in favour of receiving him at the airport but he was persuaded by his cabinet ministers to receive him. After welcoming him he rather very coldly told a senior Indian official to take the General to the cricket stadium as he had come to witness the cricket test match between India and Pakistan which was being played in Jaipur
Zia showed astonishing sang froid over his insult and smilingly told Rajiv that I have heard that India is going to attack Pakistan. You should never ever commit this blunder because if any war is thrusted upon us it won’t be conventional war. It would fought with atomic weapons which we have aplenty and mind you the people will forget Chengiz Khan and Halagu Khan. Muslims would still be living after the war was over as there are over 50 Muslim countries but no Hindu would be left alive.
After this threat India was sensible enough to ditch its plan to invade Pakistan.
The point is that Pakistan of 2016 is much stronger than Pakistan of 1987.Pakistan armed forces are ready and fighting fit to reply to any aggression from across the border. The man in the street is fully aware of their state of preparedness and that is the reason why there is no panic in the country.
