Thanks to the liberality of Pervez Musharraf there are TV channels galore in the country today which is a far cry from the days when only the PTV used to operate and that too up to 10 p.m. These days the TV channels run their programs round the clock, non -stop. The TV buffs now sleep late and get up late in the morning also. The eye sight of the children is being affected and they have become prone to so many problems of the spinal cord as they remain glued to the idiot box most of the time. They prefer seeing TV over taking part in sports activity which is a thing of the past now.
Most of the TV stations are owned by the owners of leading newspapers of the country. The Fourth Estate has, like the judiciary, executive and parliament become a potent force to be reckoned with and that is the precise reason why newspapers’ proprietors have bought TV channels as electronic media is a very significant part of the Fourth Estate.
Most of these TV channels, however, have made a dog’s dinner of their programmes. The pronunciation of many anchors and newscasters leave much to be desired. Many anchors of TV talk shows, particularly, those conducting talk shows on politics cannot acquit themselves effectively as most of their guests go bonkers .They are impatient and cannot tolerate the viewpoint of their political adversaries who are often interrupted by them while they are in the mid of their speech .If they haven’t come to fisticuffs up till hitherto it is because of some miracle.
These channels are in a mad rush to break news in order to be one-up on other channels and in the process have to cut a sorry figure when the news later on turns out to be false. One of the leading channels the other day ran a ticker that the defence minister along with his wife had fled to Dubai whereas the fact was that he had gone there for attending a marriage and returned to Islamabad after spending a night there.
