This is the world of advertisement. The advertising agencies are past masters in the art of making mountain out of a molehill. It seems that one TV channel has been assigned the task by the PPP to build up the personality cult of Bilawal. Small wonder it has been projecting Bilawal day in and day out so much so that it recently predicted his marriage in the near future and ran a couple of minutes footage on it also.
If one critically analyse the telecast of the news and current affairs’ sections of the electronic media one comes to the conclusion that they are wasting a great deal of footage on non-events and on the building up of personality cult of some politicians . In the same manner the politicians have been indulging in generalities on various issues being faced by the common man instead of giving the electorate a road map about the manner in which they are going to tackle them. They tend to talk in future tense always leading the people up the garden path by promising that they will turn the economy of the country round once they enter into the corridors of power. Their promises are vague. They don’t apprise them of the details of the modus operandi they are going to adopt for achieving them.
Isn’t it about time the political parties made public their respective election manifestoes apprising the electorate about the way they are going to carry out agricultural reforms in the country? Are they going to leave only 25acre of irrigated land in the possession of big farmers and nationalise all the remaining land for distributing it among the landless peasants? How do they plan to recover taxes from the big business who have been defying tax authorities on one pretext or the other for the last so many years and for whom the successive governments in this country have been introducing special tax amnesty schemes for whitening their black money?
