The headline of DAWN today is: PM takes back powers to sack heads of public entities.
This headline is a great commentary on the form of government that Mian Nawaz Sharif regards as Democracy. As per his interpretation of the ‘term’, if a government is not headed by him personally it is anything but democracy. It so happens that he can head the government of only one country—i.e Pakistan. In the other countries of the world he however can buy properties, and run businesses— not in his own name of course—in the name of his children.
In order to get elected to the post of the Prime Minister, the country’s Election Commission should be comprised of persons who enjoy his fullest trust and who can never be found wanting in serving him with commitment and dedication.
It will only be befitting if a law can be made to rename Pakistan’s democracy as Sharifocracy. After all the party ruling the country and headed by him carries his name in its full description i.e Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz).
If the form of Democracy Mian Nawaz Sharif has introduced in the country continues to prosper against all odds (General Raheel Sharif Panama Leaks and Imran Khan etc), a time is unlikely not to come when a dire need will be felt in the best interests of the country to take back from the COAS the powers to make promotions and transfers in the army ranks. In such an eventuality, the likelihood of the Prime Minister getting powers to recruit Captains, Majors, Colonels and Brigadiers from his family or from his party cannot be ruled out.
