The CM KPK had a point there when he said the other day that corrupt politicians were the stumbling block in the way of those who want to change the present corrupt system of governance in the country. There is no gainsaying the fact that a big number of our politicians represent the forces of status quo. It is because of them that the politics in the country has, over the years, become a very lucrative profession. Whosoever invests in it gets handsome financial returns which are many times bigger than the returns which the businessnen receive through investment in any other business in the country today.
Every member of Parliament gets crore of rupees every year ostensibly for carrying out developmental activities in their constituencies. Insiders know how much of it is actually spent on developmental works and how much goes into private pockets. Has any authority carried out its audit?Besides, the MNAs, MPAS and senators get many fringe monetary benefits under the medical and transport head of accounts, to mention a few.
Let us be frank. Like other business mafias in the country the political class is also a very strong Mafia. It would be very difficult for any political party to dismantle it. The PTI has been trying very hard to rid the present political system of the country of this menace but unless it gets a reasonable majority in Parliament his dream cannot be translated into a reality at all. A great deal would depend on the general elections of 2018. The election results would show whether or not the electorate has matured politically to the extent where it could distinguish between the good and the bad, white and black, honest and dishonest.
