The leader of the opposition in the national assembly Syed Khurshid Shah has unnecessarily started a fresh controversy by claiming on the floor of the House that parliament is superior to judiciary as it represents the will of over 20 crore Pakistanis. Many people have raised their eyebrows over this contention of the leader of opposition. They aver that ground reality does not substantiate it. Politicians or parliamentarians do what they want to do as per their wish and as per their sense. They are concerned more about their political party. How to remain in power and how to come in power?Isn’t it a fact that any TOM,DICK and HARRY can become a parliamentarian but everybody cannot become a supreme court judge?
The constitution has laid down parameters within which both parliament and judiciary has to work. The former has to make legislation for the good of the people commensurate with their wishes within the framework of the constitution while the latter has to interpret it strictly in accordance with the constitution and ensure that no such legislation is made which is against the spirit of constitution. Every legislator and judge knows it. Khurshid Shah’s statement was unwarranted and it is bound to create ill-will between these two important institutions of the state. Doesn’t he understand that self-praise is no recommendation?
