Poison is being sold in the form of packaged milk in the country for many years now. Successive governments in this country are responsible for not taking notice of the adulterated packaged milk. It was only after the recent disclosure made by the gentlemen of the Fourth Estate that a chemical known as formalin, which is used for preservation of dead bodies, is being mixed in the packaged milk, that the authorities have opened their eyes. A senior official of the ministry of science and technology while briefing a committee of the National assembly on the issue said hitherto no formal and regular laboratory checking of the contents of packaged milk was ever carried out. He also lamented the fact that there aren’t sufficient trained checking staff nor laboratories for the purpose.
Action on this issue cannot wait. Whatever the government wants to do it must do it pronto. If there is a need for effective legislation in the matter the government should take time by the forelock and get it passed at once. The culprits need to be hanged from the nearest lamp post.
