The outgoing American president Barrack Obama has said that he had to pay from his pocket bills of many utilities which he and his family enjoyed during their stay in the White House. In other words he had to pay for the expenses on his kitchen. What a contrast with the living style of rulers of third world countries like us who spend ruthlessly taxpayers ‘money for incurring all types of expenditure during their tenure as president,prime minister,governor or chief minister!The annual expenditure of the Presidency and the PM House run into many crores o rupees. Every ruler claims at the time of assuming charge of his office that he would bring it down but at the end of the day one finds that instead of decrease there has been manifold increase in it.
In our political history there had been a few notable exceptions amongst the rulers who were not spendthrift but they can be counted on fingers. Besides the father of nation, who was very cautious while spending a single penny out of government funds,one finds people like prime ministers Chaudri Mohammad Ali,Malik Mehraj Khalid,Liaqat Ali Khan and President Ghulam Ishaque Khan who preferred simple living and avoided extravagant life style. Unfortunately the role models for most of our rulers have been kings like Haroon Rashid, Saudi princess, Sultan of Brunei and Sheikhs of Emirates.
