Two prominent figures of the broadcasting world met their Maker recently. Coming close on the heels of the death of Aslam Azhar was the demise of Sir Terry Wogan. It was Aslam Azhar who was instrumental in building up the PTV though like Wogan he was basically a radio man . Radio was the first love of both these broadcasters par excellence whose pronunciation was flawless and immaculate. It was certainly a treat to listen to their voice. Both were men of letters and sat at the feet of literati of their times. When Wogan was once asked as to what was the precise difference between radio and TV, his reply was that while radio broadened your vision, TV restricted it. Wogan ran the famous BBC Radio programme TODAY for many decades and left it at the height of its popularity when it used to be heard by millions of radio fans.
The present day radio and TV broadcasts in this country leave much to be desired. The standard of pronunciation of the broadcasters has fallen down considerably. Persons like Aslam Azhar must be turning in their graves over the way our broadcasters pronounce words. Due care is not being exercised in the selection of news readers and anchors. Wouldn’t it be better if men of letters are engaged as consultants by our broadcasting institutions for looking after the grammar aspects of the radio and TV broadcasts. It is a pity that broadcasters like Z A Bokhari, his brother Patras, Salim Gilani and Zia Mohayudin are a rare commodity these days.
Sharjeel Memon says his name should be removed from the ECL so that he returns to Pakistan. He had better wait. Who knows one fine morning we all come to know that Nawaz Shareef has hit it off with Zardari, given reprieve to all corrupt politicians belonging to the PPP by promulgating an NRO-type of law thus paving Sharjeel’s return to Pakistan. After all Zardari’s spouse had benefited from this novel piece of legislation in the past. Till then he can enjoy himself the political asylum in England which he will surely get once he applies for it, otherwise, he can stay in Dubai in the posh apartment of his mentor as long as he desires. Who has the courage, gumption and power to lay hands on the corrupt and that too in a foreign country if he belongs to the elite class. Law in this country is not blind. It differentiates between the rich and the poor, between the weak and the mighty and between the white and the black.
