South Korea’s Constitutional Court, by upholding the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye has set an example for other Asian Countries to deal with massive corruption, graft, plunder and greed with an iron hand. As soon as the court ruling was made public the whole of South Korea went wild with joy, and there were celebrations all around. The celebrations are still continuing.
This reminds us of the celebrations that had seized the national mood in Pakistan on the morning of the 13th of October 1999. At that point of time in our history no court was involved. Nor any court judgment. Infact no mass movement had preceded the events of the evening and the night of the 12th of October 1999. Yet the outburst of national joy could be gauged from the statement that the leader of the opposition, the late Benazir Bhutto had made in exile: Thanks God the era of misrule and darkness is over.
Pakistan of 2017 presents a scenario that is not drastically different from that of October 1999. We have the same Prime Minister. The same kind of opposition. The same mood in the GHQ.
The only factor added is the Supreme Court. And of course Imran Khan. The people in an over-whelming numbers are aching to celebrate. And their expectant eyes are focused on the building adjacent to our Parliament which witnessed the demise of DECENCY on the 9th of March 2017. Mian Javed Latif of Noon League used language which would make a street hoodlum feel inferior. And Murad Saeed of the PTI reacted in a manner that left a lot to be desired.
One thing is absolutely certain.
