LAHORE, March 21: Senior journalist Mujib ur-Rehman Shami has on Tuesday said that Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif’s father, Mian Sharif, had once told him that former President Pervez Musharraf had offered Shehbaz Sharif premiership.
Talking in a private television channel programme, Shami said that Mian Sharif (late) had informed him about Musharraf’s offer to the current Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shehbaz Sharif to assume the office of Prime Minister after removing Nawaz in a military coup on October 12, 1999.
When Nawaz Sharif was in jail in Karachi, his father-in-law had died. After the funeral, Mian Sharif had told me that Musharraf had suggested Shehbaz Sharif to become Prime Minister of Pakistan, replacing Nawaz. It was when Nawaz was still PM (before the 1999 coup), he said.
This could have been a plot to create wedge between PM and his brother, or it could be that Musharraf had some love for Shehbaz, or it could just be that Nawaz wanted to get rid of Musharraf. So Mian Sharif told me about this and added that he had asked Shehbaz why didn’t he shared this information when Musharraf had made the suggestion, Shami added. -NNI
