In this country the fat cats never get punished. They seldom get their just deserts. The lawyers fully exploit the legal concession which says that it doesn’t matter if ten killers get away with lightly but one innocent shouldn’t be hanged. The courts give the benefit of the doubt to the accused even if they notice a slight flaw in the prosecution case or if there is not sufficient evidence to convict the alleged accused.
The rulers also exploit this legal concession in those cases where they want to blackmail their political adversaries who might be involved in any criminal offence and with whom they want to hit it off by withdrawing cases against them in order to gain their political support. As a bargain they then direct the Prosecution not to press charges against them. Obviously when the Prosecution doesn’t show much interest in properly laying before the court concrete evidence the accused get tremendous benefit.
Sometimes such politically motivated Regulations like the notorious NRO are also put into effect after the rulers tell their political adversaries that you scratch my back and I will scratch yours.
Sharjeel Memon is the latest case in point. He would never have returned to this country had he, or his political boss, not entered into some sort of mutually beneficial accord with the present rulers. Nobody should be surprised if one fine morning he is given a clean bill of health by the same Prosecution Agency which is charging him today for misappropriating billions of rupees.
