Most of our educational institutions are bereft of sports facilities with the result that the students cannot be engaged in healthy extracurricular activities. Not many of our colleges have sports’grounds. In the same manner, gone are the days when the colleges used to arrange open debates on social issues regularly every week in which the students were supposed to compete . Likewise, every college worth its salt used to publish a college magazine once or thrice a month in which the students were encouraged to write prose and poetry and sit on its editorial board. These extracurricular activities kept the students busy and their pent-up energies were channelised in healthy pursuits so they were left with no time to think about any thing else. . Since this is not being done, the politicians made inroads to the colleges by setting up their proxy students’ unions with the sole object to use students as a cannon fodder in their political guns directed against the sitting government if it happens to be their political adversary.
Lately , students have been naming their unions after their nationalities like the Baloch students union,Sindh students’union etc etc smacking parochialism, which is unfortunate, to say the least. We are Muslims first and then Pakistanis. Our identity is Islam and Pakistan and we should feel proud by introducing ourselves as Pakistani Muslims only.
Last week two groups of students clashed with each other in Panjab university in which many students suffered injuries. There is no doubt , whatever, that students who were involved in such activities get their cue from some leading political parties of the country who want to grind their own axe against the government by inciting trouble whenever they get its slightest opportunity. These unions have become so strong in some colleges and universities that they have made the administration of their colleges as hostage. In many students’ hostels the students keep weaponry of all sorts with them as if they have joined colleges for fight and not for studies. Most of the parents resent outside political interference in the students ‘affairs which has been resulting in the wastage of precious time of their offspring on whose education they are spending their hard earned income so as to enable them to stand on their own feet after completing their education.
