Every year 1st of May is observed as international labour day in memory of those labourers who gave their lives in their struggle to achieve due rights of the labourers. It was due to their heroic struggle that the labour class in the world is enjoying today whatever little rights it had won after a long struggle of their leaders in the past because time was when the labourers were made to work by the factory owners for 15 hours out of 24 hours. Weekly off days were unheard of. There was no maternity leave for the women labourers and no medical provision for the labourers who got injured during work on the machines in the factory. Things are much better for them today but this certainly does not mean that the labour class has achieved all its due rights. There is still a lot to be done to improve its living conditions.
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was probably the first leader who tried to carry out labour reforms. . Before and after him, unfortunately no leader paid due attention to improve economic condition of labourers. Most of the leaders who came into power in this country only paid lip service to their cause.
The labourers in this country continue to eke out a miserable living. There is a dire need to ameliorate their lot.
