Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has never missed any opportunity to fly away from Pakistan (officially on tour and unofficially for excursion).
Field Marshal Ayub Khan the all-powerful ruler of Pakistan in the 1960s did not go on foreign Tours as many times in his decade as Mian Sahib has in 13 months or so, since the name Panama has hit the headlines the worldover—more so in Pakistan.
He needed to be away from Pakistan right now. Which he conveniently is— curtsey King Salman bin Abdul Aziz’s invitation. The earlier propaganda line was that special parleys would take place between President Trump and Mian Sahib with the efforts of the Saudi King, inorder to facilitate harmony and understanding between Trump’s Washington and Mian’s Islamabad.
It has turned out that Mian Sahib, like many other invitees to the conference was required to fill the hall. Mystery apparently surrounds the PM’s decision to take along in his entourage his sons’ lawyer Akram Sheikh. But it isn’t any mystery to those who know Qatar’s ruling family was there too. And the name Qatar has special significance in Prime Minister’s heroic efforts to fight off the onrushing trouble, if the JIT in the Panama seeks audience with the Qatari prince who wrote letters of Arabian Nights dimensions in the defense of Sharifs.
Visiting Madinah is an honour for any Muslim. And Mian Sahib remains a Muslim in heart despite the mountains of wealth and scandal he is buried under.
But has his wish to atleast shake hands with Trump been fulfilled?
It seems Trump too suffers from selective dementia like Zardari Sahib.
He talked for tens of minutes on terrorism but the word Pakistan couldn’t find its way to his eloquent tongue. My tweet on the occasion was: TRUMP WAS KEEN TO MEET NAWAZ SHARIF BUT DIDN’T KNOW WHICH COUNTRY HE WAS PRIME MINISTER OF (just being on the lighter side).
