Like our national carrier, the Railways too have fallen on bad days. The latter is a poor man’ s transport who still prefers to travel in it on longer routes, particularly, if he has to take his women folk and children also along with him because it is cheaper and comfortable.
It is a fact that we had inherited a very efficient railway system from the Britishers on the eve of partition of the sub- continent back in 1947.We could have improved on it but it is a pity that we presided over its deterioration. It goes without saying that a majority of those who have been moving in the corridors of power in this country over the years either belonged to the class of road transporters or were their sympathisers.Nobody understood better than them that the more the railways deteriorate the more the chance of growth of road transport so they saw to it that all genuine attempts aimed at the rehabilitation of the railways are scuttled.
The travel by railway is much cheaper and much comfortable than other modes of transport on road.In the same manner it is also quicker for the traders to send their merchandise from one corner of the country to another through goods trains .
It is about time the government rehabilitated railways on a war footing.
