Will Mian Nawaz Sharif succeed in his grand conspiracy to push both, Pakistan’s Judiciary and Military, back against the wall ? Will he be able to repeat his successes of 1997 and 1998?
In 1997, he had acted swiftly and successfully to strike out 58-2 (b) from the Constitution—so as to render his ‘temporary’ ally President Farooq Laghari helpless. By the end of the same year he had conquered the Supreme Court of Pakistan through a two-phased invasion. In one phase, N-League hoodlums had ransacked the building of the country’s apex court and forced the Chief Justice and other judges run for life. And in the other phase he had carried out the notorious ‘Justice Tarar operation’ with stunning swiftness and precision.
He had virtually created a new Supreme Court— a bevy of judges who were ready to oblige, in return for ‘you know what’.
In 1998, he had sent a serving COAS, General Karamat home to establish his ‘unchallenged authority’ in the way the State would be run.
But that is a buried past. This is year 2017. And it is a different Supreme Court— with judges who are prepared to face even ‘the threat of bullets’ to establish the supremacy of Law, and of Constitution. And this is a different COAS — a COAS who says “We will stand by and behind the State Writ—- the Constitution and the Supremacy of Law”.
Mian is in a mood of WAR. But his man weapon—-MONEY—has not worked this time. Even though a number of media houses and opinion-makers stand ‘BOUGHT OUT’, those forces who really matter are in no mood to say YES TO THE CALL OF SATAN.
