An unannounced election campaign has already started in the country. Political parties are girding up their loins . MMA stands revived and it is going to help the religious parties winning quite a number of provincial assembly seats in the KPK,particularly. In Sindh it is not as yet clear whether or not Dr Farooq Sattar is still toeing the line of MQM London headed by Altaf Hussain or he has snapped all his ties with his erstwhile leader! It would be interesting to see how does the PTI play its cards in Sindh. Would it gang up with Mustafa Kamal’ s group or side with Dr Farooq Sattar in the ensuing general elections. As far as the PTI and Nawaz League are concernced it is very much clear that they would be the main rivals in the next general elections. What about the PPP? Is it going to hit it off with Nawaz League or come to some sort of electoral understanding with the PTI on the sly, if not in the open? There are many who would like the PTI to contest every seat of NA and PAs on its own steam without any open or hidden understanding with any political party the way Z. A. Bhutto had fought all the political parties single- handedly in the 1970 polls. Contrary to this view is a strong lobby inside the PTI which advises the PTI chairman to be pragmatic rather than idealistic as idealism doesn’t work in this country.
Hundreds of political parties have, over the years, managed to get themselves registered with the Election Commission of Pakistan. Only a dozen or two out of them only have any real roots among the people. The rest are simply paper tigers. The EC had better cut, prune and trim them down. Necessary law is there. All that is needed is the will on the part of the EC to implement it across the board in letter and spirit.
