I don’t want to feel like Gibbon writing about “Decline and Fall of Roman Empire”.
But I can’t help feeling the way I am feeling as I construct a phrase of my own the Gibbon Style: THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE SHARIF EMPIRE.
It was not (or is not) an Empire of Territory like The Roman Empire. But EMPIRE it has been all the same. In the era we live in the Empires are measured strictly in fiscal terms. I remember the young Nawaz Sharif who had got himself inducted in the Political Life of the country by joining the Tehrik-i-Istaqlal of the late Asghar Khan. I remember also some meetings of the National Working Committee of the TI at Mian Nawaz Sharif’s residence in the Model Town.
His father had assessed that the TI was the rising star. But when the promised elections were called off by General Zia ul Haque and Air Marshal (Rtd) Asghar Khan was put under house arrest, Mian Nawaz Sharif had only one way to go—the WAY OF THE GENERALS.
Initially his rise was engineered by General Jilani and General Hameed Gul. Subsequently Mian Nawaz Sharif under his shrewd father’s guidance learnt the art of flattery and opportunism to carve his way into the corridors where power was.
He had been taught that POWER meant MONEY, and MONEY meant POWER.
He was never accustomed to making Corruption a matter of morality and conscience. Money in the Sharif Dictionary of Morality had its own set of values. Money had the power to buy out people, to make people your pawns and proxies, and to manipulate your way UP.
So far so good.
But then came the craze for ABSOLUTE POWER — for TOTAL DOMINANCE and UNCHALLENGED CONTROL.
And this craze led him into conflicts with PEOPLE who too had power in their areas— power that he was quick to identify as THREAT.
From General Asif Janjua, to President Ghulam Ishaque Khan, to General Kakar, to General Karmat, to Justice Syed Sajjad Ali Shah, to President Farooq Laghari, to General Pervez Musharraf, to General Raheel Sharif, to General Qamar Javaid Bajwa, to the Justices of the present HIGH JUDICIARY— the story of Mian Nawaz Sharif has been the story of CONFRONTATION.
It was in the first week of April 2016 that Allah Almighty struck at last. From nowhere the term PANAMA arrived in our political life like a THUNDERBOLT, and nothing has been the same again.
When ‘luck’ runs out, you find yourself in the company of BAD LUCK.
Mian Nawaz Sharif’s BAD LUCK moves with him like one’s shadow. It has a name too. It is known as Maryam Nawaz Sharif. She will be known in history as a key cause of the DECLINE & FALL OF THE SHARIF EMPIRE.
