This is the season of political somersaults galore in which one can see political leaders changing their political loyalties at the drop of hat. Elections are round the corner and during this time the heads of political parties always search candidates who are capable of winning the polls. Considerations like merit, honesty, integrity and education of candidates , unfortunately, simply don’t weigh with them while searching persons for awarding party tickets to them for elections. The only factor which matters to them is whether they can make it to the assemblies. Never a day goes by when one doesn’t see some politician deserting his old political party and joining that political party which in his own wisdom, stands better chance of winning the forthcoming elections. The newspapers are full of photographs showing the chief of the political party placing party’s cap on the head of the new entrants to his party. Little do these party leaders realise that the deserters from other political parties who change their colour like the proverbial chameleon are no more than fair weather friends and they would ditch them in the same manner in which they have ducked their former political parties. They cannot be loyal to anybody, not to their own self.
It is a pity that our politics still gyrate round linguistic jingoism, parochialism, sectarianism , caste and other such petty considerations and the electorate has not yet learned to ignore these factors and vote on merit only. Small wonder it has been the endeavour of every political party to get into its fold as many electable candidates as possible.
