Every political party worth its salt is in search of a catchy slogan which could attract public attention during the election campaign in the forthcoming electioneering but hitherto no body has been able to find one which could fire public imagination . In the past leaders of some political parties used to harp on the tune of socialism in order to win heart of the teeming millions who were not sure where their next meal would come from. They vowed to end feudalism and carry out land reforms . It was another matter that they themselves were big landlords. In the past the men of the cloth used to promise the electorate that they would bring in Islamic system of governance in the country should it voted them into power. What they didn’t tell the masses was which Islamic system they had in mind as it is common knowledge that the clerics in this country are riven with differences galore. Meat of one is a poison of the other. The adherents of one sect don’t offer prayers in the mosques belonging to another sect. There are some political parties who realise in their heart of hearts that they cannot win elections simultaneously in all the provinces of the country so they in their own wisdom are concentrating on one province or the other in the hope that by inciting the feelings of the masses through linguistic jingoism and nationalism they might win a couple of seats in one odd province which would enable them to create their nuisance value. They would become a strong bargaining chip in the formation of the coalition government which they think is going to be the fate of this country as at the moment no single party in the country is in a position to sweep the polls and make government in the centre and provinces on its own volition. It will need the support of smaller groups for the purpose willy nilly.
The politicians have been leading the electorate up the garden path by making verbal empty promises which they had no intention to keep. It is, therefore, about time that now whenever they knock the door of the voters this time round with the request to vote for them the latter should ask them to make public their written manifesto which up till now they haven’t shared with the common man. They should apply their mind to its contents and if they are hundred percent sure that the promises made therein are people-friendly rather than elite- friendly only then they should vote for them.
