The other night Agha Hillaly, in his programme on 92 said: “After 1999, Mian Nawaz Sharif changed drastically. He arrived at the conclusion that the only way he could recapture power in Pakistan was an erosion of the power of the Pak Army which could only occur with the connivance of and with India.”
I tend to agree with this viewpoint but I don’t agree that this transformation of mind, soul and conscience occurred because of 1999 and the developments related to it. MNS earlier in 1993 had paid a huge amount to the-then Chief Justice to secure a verdict in his favour against President Ghulam Ishaque Khan. But this expensively purchased verdict didn’t prevent his term of office from ending only some weeks later because of the-then Army Chief General Kakar’s intervention. Even though that intervention was fair and non-partisan in the sense that general elections were held soon after, in which MNS could secure only as many seats as his party deserved. It was then that he arrived at a decision in his mind that he would pursue a two-pronged policy—elimination of BB from the scene and cutting down the power of the ‘Khaki’ uniform by adopting a reconciliatory stance regarding India. Let Kashmir issue be confined to occasional statements of ‘principled’ nature, and let a back-door be opened to approach the Indian leaders with open arms. The visit of the first BJP PM of India Mr Vajpayee to Lahore was MNS’s giant step in this direction. Quite clearly the GHQ got alarmed at the Kashmir sellout. Hence the Kargil War– which shattered Mian’s dreams of Partnership with India. When all the facts come out, the people of Pakistan will know MNS’s thinking processes had got overrun and conquered by an obscene desire to join the club of Ambanis, Mittals, Barlas, Tata’s and Jindals etc.
It is his misfortune that Pakistan happens to be a Security State. And in a Security State, the will of the State’s Defenders ultimately prevails.
Still MNS has gone all out to pave the way for a foreign Intervention in Pakistan—Iraq style. In Iraq, Bush wanted a SMOKING GUN which he couldn’t get technically but a statement of General Powel an endorsement by Tony Blair were enough to provide him an excuse for invading Iraq.
His argument in support of his decision to invade, was that Iraq was building Weapons of Mass Destructions. Mian Nawaz Sharif is providing our enemies with a ‘certified excuse’ of similar nature. In his interview with Cyril Almeida of Dawn he has said: “Military organizations are active in Pakistan. Call them non-state actors. Should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai?”
A ‘responsible’ citizen of Pakistan who has been PM thrice making this kind of a confession (false or true) is providing a SMOKING GUN to our enemies in their narrative that PAKISTAN IS A TERRORISM- SPONSORING STATE.
Pakistan is not Iraq. It has power to thwart all kinds of nefarious designs against it.
BUT WHY IS MNS STILL NOT ON TRIAL FOR TREASON?
