The appointment of Ali Jahangir Siddiqui—a tycoon son of a tycoon—as Pakistan’s ambassador to America is reflective of the sad approach our ‘democratic’ governments have adopted towards handling the global challenges in the realm of diplomacy. The only qualification of this fellow is that he is son of Jahangir Siddiqui—the founder owner of J.S Bank and related enterprises— and has been on his way to becoming a tycoon himself on the pattern of his father and of those whose patronage his father has enjoyed.
He has landed in that seat in Washington not accidentally but because he wanted to be there—because he developed yearning for that prestigious as well as influential position—and because those in authority in Islamabad wanted their man to be close to the ears of Washington.
In his very first TV interview there, he has emphatically stated that five years of Nawaz-led government in Pakistan have seen improvement and progress in economy. His statements regarding Pak-US relations India-US relations and Pak-India relations are classical studies in confusion and directionlessness.
This is a seat where Pakistan today needs the very best of diplomatic brains— one in which the ideology of Pakistan is rooted deep, and which is capable of constructing a narrative that is neither too diplomatic nor too inflexible. The biggest tragedy in the area of our diplomacy started occurring when we de-linked the issue of Kashmir from Water. Off course the right of self-determination of millions of Kashmiris has mattered but the issue of Kashmir is much more than that. Kashmir is Pakistan’s lifeline because Water is Life.
The founder of Pakistan was not fond of making simply sweet-sounding statements. He always meant each word that he uttered.
Pakistan needs its best and most patriotic brains stationed in Washington, Moscow, London, Beijing and New Dehli.
We can find different options for our Ali Janagir Siddiquis and Hussain Haqqanis, and look for Agha Shahis to be in diplomatic control.
I don’t know much about Ali Jahangir Siddiqui, but Haqqani is the other NAME of CROOKED BRILLIANCE.
The reasons behind Nawaz sending Ali Jahangir to Washington and Zardari sending Haqqani there are the same.
