Reward and punishment

Implementation of the concept of reward and punishment is sine qua non for the stability of a society and there should be no discrimination in its application. It needs to be enforced on both the rich and the poor, the weak and the mighty. That society is bound to collapse in which the financially affluent get away with their crimes.
The enforcement of this concept in this country is flawed. Barring an odd case here or there , the filthy rich are often let off the hook. Very few people can have the stomach to stay in jail for a longer time. Every leader is not Nelson Mandela, Bacha Khan or Faiz Ahmad Faiz , to mention a few, who had faced with a smile long jail terms without creating any fuss or demanding special privileges for themselves in jail. A majority of our political leaders are paper tigers. They cannot face the rigours of jail and don’t mind secretly tendering apology to the powers that be for seeking their forgiveness. They, however, in order save their face try to give impression to the public as if their release from prison is due to the result of any political understanding with the government which they euphemistically call as a deal.
The coming few months would determine whether or not history is going to repeat itself. Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif would be writing his party’s obituary if he once again left the country on any political pretext, courtesy request of his friends in Saudi Arabia or Turkey to our rulers. The results of the general elections that are being held on 25th July 2018 are also going to determine to a great extent his future course of action.
